GILGIT: A tragic incident occurred in the remote Kande Nangma Valley of Ghanche district when a French mountaineer lost his life during an expedition to scale the renowned K6 peak in the Karakoram mountain range.

According to preliminary reports, 40-year-old French climber Pierre Guillaume was killed after being struck by an avalanche of snow and rocks while ascending the 7,282-meter-high K6 peak. Local authorities confirmed that the accident occurred as the mountaineer was making his way toward the summit.

Rescue operations were launched immediately after the incident. A local rescue team from Hushe village, led by Ghulam Abbas, is currently working to transport the body from the base camp. Sources said the body is expected to be brought down to the nearest populated area today.

K6 is considered one of the most challenging and technically demanding peaks in the Karakoram range, known for its harsh weather conditions, avalanche risks, and extremely difficult climbing routes.

The tragic death has cast a shadow of grief over the local community and the international mountaineering fraternity, highlighting the dangers faced by climbers attempting some of the world’s most formidable peaks.
