THE HAGUE: The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered Israel to halt its offensive in the war-torn Gaza city of Rafah, where fighting between the Israeli army and Hamas has left thousands dead and displaced.

Announcing the decision, ICJ President Nawaf Salam said the humanitarian situation in Rafah had “deteriorated further” since the court’s ruling on March 28.

The ICJ announced a 13-2 majority decision on South Africa’s emergency request for an end to Israeli aggression in Rafah.

The President of the ICJ said: “The Court is not convinced that the evacuation efforts and related measures taken by Israel to increase the security of the civilians recently displaced from the Gaza Strip and especially the Rafah Governorate have done, are sufficient to greatly reduce the risk that the Palestinian population faces as a result of the military offensive in Rafah.
