NEW DELHI: India’s National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) has reported 31,677 cases of sexual assault across the country in 2021, highlighting ongoing concerns about the safety of women in the country.

As per the details, a recent high-profile case involving the assault and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor has drawn attention to the criminal justice system’s handling of such cases. The accused, police officer Sanjay Rai, was sentenced to life imprisonment instead of the death penalty, a decision that has sparked significant public debate.

Judge Anirban Das, who presided over the case, said in his ruling that the case “does not qualify as one of the rarest cases” that warrant the death penalty under Indian law. The ruling has sparked a debate among legal experts about the guidelines for sentencing in cases involving law enforcement officials.

The case parallels the 2012 Nirbhaya case, which previously sparked nationwide protests and legislative reforms. Both cases have contributed to the ongoing public debate about women’s safety and legal protections in India.

International media outlets have reported that sexual assault is one of the most recorded crimes against women in India. Various human rights organizations continue to monitor and report on the situation and call for protective measures and judicial reforms.

The recent court ruling has reinvigorated the public debate about the effectiveness of the current legal framework for dealing with crimes against women, especially those involving government employees.
