University of London to start educational programs in Lahore

LAHORE: In a major development to enhance educational opportunities in Punjab, the University of London has agreed to start its academic activities in Lahore. The decision follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif in response to her proposal to bring world-class education to the region.

The move by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif aims to provide Punjabi students with access to education from a world-renowned university in London. In addition, steps are being taken to expand the scope of higher education by bringing more international universities to the province.

In line with the plan, Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb met with University of London Vice Chancellor Professor Wendy Thompson to discuss the launch of the Semester Exchange Programme. The meeting, which was also attended by a delegation of academic experts from the University of London, focused on educational cooperation and student exchange opportunities between Punjab and the UK.

As part of the discussions, Maryam Nawaz Sharif invited the University of London to open an office in Punjab, with the aim of fostering closer ties and providing more accessible educational opportunities.

Maryam Aurangzeb highlighted that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has offered an increasing number of scholarships, 60 percent of which are reserved for female students. The scholarships will now cover 50,000 students, a significant increase from the previous 30,000, which will further promote gender equality in education. The Chief Minister’s efforts are aimed at modernizing and improving the entire education system in Punjab, with a special focus on curriculum development, teacher training and renovation of educational institutions.

The senior minister added that work is underway to establish a National University in Murree as per the Chief Minister’s directives to improve educational infrastructure across the province.

Professor Wendy Thompson, while appreciating the Chief Minister’s efforts for the improvement of education and governance in Punjab, termed these initiatives highly commendable. He expressed his excitement about the potential collaboration between the University of London and educational institutions in Punjab.

This collaboration marks a promising new chapter in Punjab’s educational development, providing students with the opportunity to connect with world-class educational resources without leaving their home country.
