TEHRAN: Iran accomplished its operation to seize two ships in the vital Strait of Hormuz on Wednesday, which enabled the country to establish stronger control over the essential waterway.

This development occurred during a period when regional tensions increased despite ongoing diplomatic attempts and uncertainty about the proposed ceasefire.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) took two ships into its custody after Iranian officials reported that the semi-official Tasnim news agency found these vessels to have committed maritime violations.

This incident represents the first documented instance of maritime vessel capture since fighting resumed in late February. According to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) report, three vessels encountered gunfire in the strait.

An Iranian patrol craft approached one vessel located northeast of Oman before opening fire with gunfire and rocket-propelled grenades, which caused extensive destruction to its bridge. No fatalities occurred during the incident.

The Strait of Hormuz functions as a vital global energy passageway through which approximately 20 percent of worldwide oil and liquefied natural gas shipments travel. Iran has issued multiple statements declaring its intention to block maritime traffic through the waterway while ongoing disputes with the United States remain unresolved.

The events occurred after US President Donald Trump announced that Washington accepted a request from Pakistani mediators to suspend its military operations against Iran until diplomatic discussions advance.

The United States military operation against Iran will remain suspended until Iranian leaders develop a complete plan, which they will present for negotiation, according to Trump.

Trump stated through social media that the United States military operation against Iran will remain suspended until Iranian leaders present their complete plan for negotiations. Despite presenting what seemed like a temporary suspension, Trump confirmed that US naval forces would proceed with their operations against Iranian maritime activities.

The United States recently conducted a seizure operation in which they established control over the board.
