WASHINGTON: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally apologized to Qatar for the attack on Hamas leaders in Doha during his visit to the United States.

The apology was reportedly part of a larger deal aimed at pressuring Hamas to accept the Trump administration’s 21-point peace plan.

Netanyahu apologized for violating Qatar’s sovereignty with the Doha attack but did not express regret for targeting Hamas.

Netanyahu apologized to the Qatari prime minister by phone from the White House.

A Qatari security guard was killed in the Doha attack, for which Netanyahu expressed condolences. In a recent interview, he said that Israel’s only target is Hamas and that he hopes for a mutual understanding on the matter.

This is the first reported direct public contact between the leaders of Israel and Qatar, although secret talks have taken place in the past.

Earlier, President Trump called the Emir of Qatar before Netanyahu’s arrival in the United States to discuss resuming Qatar’s mediation role in the Gaza ceasefire.
