WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has warned that if potential New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani does not take what he calls the ‘right steps’, he will stop the funding received by the federal government to the city.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News that “if he (Zohran Mamdani) is elected mayor, I will hold him accountable as president. If he does not make the right decisions, New York will not get a penny.”

Trump not only targeted Mamdani but also called him a communist, saying, “This would be disastrous for New York. I think this would never happen, but now we have a communist coming in front of us.”

Zahran Mamdani is considered an outspoken supporter of the Palestinian people in New York and a critic of Israeli policies. He founded the college chapter of the organization “Students for Justice in Palestine” and also went on a hunger strike in front of the White House in favor of a ceasefire in 2023.

Zahran defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo in the recent primary election and is now close to becoming the first Muslim mayor of New York City. His victory is being considered a historic turning point for the Muslim community in America.

Trump has also threatened to cut off funding to various states, universities, and authorities in the past if they deviate from his policies.
