RIYADH: In a recent development, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is making remarkable efforts to guarantee the health and safety of Umrah pilgrims during 2025 by enforcing stricter health regulations.

The Saudi Civil Aviation Authority now requires that all pilgrims obtain vaccinations for meningococcal meningitis, polio, yellow fever, COVID-19, and seasonal influenza.

It is essential for all international visitors to receive the meningitis vaccine. Additionally, those traveling from regions affected by polio—such as Pakistan, Nigeria, and Afghanistan—must also be vaccinated against polio. Pilgrims arriving from Angola, Nigeria, Brazil, and Congo are required to have yellow fever vaccinations.

Furthermore, adherence to the World Health Organization’s (WHO) guidelines regarding COVID-19 and flu vaccinations has become compulsory. Pilgrims are encouraged to complete their immunizations for other diseases such as tetanus and measles as well.

Authorities strongly recommend that all travelers carry important health documents including vaccination certificates throughout their journey. Those with chronic medical conditions should take along relevant medical records alongside an adequate supply of medication in its original packaging.

To reduce the risk of transmitting vector-borne illnesses like Zika virus and dengue fever, it is advised that travelers use insect repellents containing DEET, IR3535 or Icaridin while wearing protective clothing. These actions reflect Saudi Arabia’s ongoing commitment to ensuring the welfare of millions visiting Makkah and Madinah each year for Umrah.

In a related announcement, Chaudhry Salik Hussain—the Minister for Religious Affairs and Interfaith Harmony—and Dr. Tawfiq bin Fawzan Al-Rabiah—the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah signed the annual Hajj agreement for 2025 between Pakistan and Saudi Arabia.

This agreement permits 179,210 Pakistani pilgrims to partake in Hajj this year; they will be provided with special  accommodation rates in Mina along with additional options ranging from 4 to 8 days’ stay in Madinah.
