Trump aims to prevent TikTok ban in the US

WASHINGTON: In a bold move to avert the impending shutdown of TikTok in the United States, President-elect Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court to grant him the authority to negotiate the platform’s fate.

In an amicus brief filed with the nation’s highest court, Trump has stressed his unique position to resolve the dispute. His filing announced that once in office, he intends to resolve the matter through diplomatic means, stressing that he uniquely combines the “complete dealmaking skills, electoral mandate, and political will” needed to maintain the platform’s presence in the United States.

The Supreme Court’s recent decision to review the case comes after Congress passed legislation to ban TikTok, citing national security concerns. At issue is whether the ban violates First Amendment rights.

Notably, the legislation includes a provision allowing presidential discretion to delay the implementation of the ban, provided that PlattDance – TikTok’s Chinese parent company – makes meaningful progress toward reducing control over the platform.

Timing presents a significant challenge, as the legal deadline falls on January 19 – just 24 hours before Trump’s scheduled inauguration.

In documents filed with the Supreme Court, the president-elect is seeking to suspend that January 19 deadline. Trump claims that his proposed negotiating strategy would eliminate the need for the court to rush its ruling on the complex First Amendment issues at stake.
