MOSCOW: Ukrainian drones have carried out major attacks on key Russian air bases, destroying more than 40 Russian aircraft, including four Tu-95 strategic bombers. These bombers are considered key assets of Russia’s strategic aviation.
Ukraine has carried out drone strikes and destroyed four Tu-95 bombers stationed at a Russian air base. These aircraft are considered strategic aviation assets of Russia and are used to transport nuclear materials.
According to reports, the attacks were carried out at the Olena air base where Russian strategic bombers were destroyed. Ukraine used FPV drones that were launched from trucks near the airfield.
The attacks took place at various locations in the Siberian regions, including Diaghilev, Olena, and Ivanovo. Sources say that the aircraft destroyed in this operation include Tu-95, Tu-22M3 bombers and A-50s.
The A-50s are used as early warning aircraft, which are important for aerial surveillance and advance warning of attacks.
The drones were reportedly launched from inside Russian territory, possibly from trucks, and one of the vehicles was seized and its driver arrested, although it is not known whether he was aware of the attack.
The operation, codenamed ‘Web’, is one of the largest Ukrainian drone strikes to date, demonstrating Ukraine’s ability to carry out long-range strikes deep inside Russia.
The Ukrainian attack is being described as a major failure of Russian intelligence, as it has failed to protect its vital air assets.
Russian authorities have confirmed the attacks but have not released full details of the damage.
