WASHINGTON: The United States has issued a stern warning to Indian nationals who overstay their visas, warning that violators could face deportation and a permanent ban on future travel to the country. The warning comes amid a sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants under the Trump administration.

In a statement posted on X, the US Embassy in India made it clear that any violation of immigration laws would have serious consequences. “If you overstay your authorized stay in the United States, you may be subject to deportation and may face a permanent ban on future travel to the United States,” the embassy warned.

The advisory comes as US immigration authorities have stepped up enforcement actions to target foreign nationals living in the country without legal status. According to official estimates, about 7.25 million Indian nationals are currently living in the US illegally, and this number is constantly growing.

While the Trump administration has consistently taken a tough stance on immigration, recent efforts appear to have increased scrutiny of Indian nationals. Officials have stressed that overstaying or violating visa conditions — regardless of personal circumstances — will not be tolerated and will be met with strong legal action.

The data also shows a significant increase in Indian nationals seeking asylum in the United States in 2023, with more than 51,000 Indian nationals applying for asylum — a 470 percent increase over the past five years. Many applicants cited economic hardship, political instability, and fear of persecution as reasons for leaving India.
