NEW YORK: A video of Zohran Mamdani, the newly elected first Muslim mayor of New York City, has gone viral on various social media platforms after a touching experience with a woman from Lahore, Pakistan.

The video shared online on January 2, 2026, finds Mamdani engaged in a conversation with the woman during a public encounter. Upon realizing that the other woman was from Lahore, Mamdani quickly shifted from speaking in English to Urdu.

In this discussion, he recalled visiting the city before, referring to it as a “lovely city,” which he addressed in Urdu, having a significant impact on viewers, particularly Pakistani users on social media platforms.

“The woman thanked Mamdani for the kind of thing she described as ‘changing people’s hearts’; she said that his beauty was not on the outside, but on the inside, through his character and behavior.”
According to reports, this momentous scene moved Mamdani to tears, which made the video clip more viral on the internet.

The video has gone viral among the Pakistani and South Asian social circle crowd, who were applauding Mamdani’s connection to culture, his humility, and his capability to connect warmly with people in the Diaspora.
