LAHORE: Punjab’s government has taken a significant step toward electric mobility by purchasing electric bikes for the excise department employees.

This also means that the province has decided to bring the official field operations into the electric mobility era, consequently leading to a cut in fuel costs and a rise in eco-friendly transport.

The province of Punjab has opted to acquire electric bicycles for excise inspectors operating in the whole province, including Lahore. As per the officials, around 200 electrically powered bicycles will be procured and provided to the inspectors in different districts depending upon the working requirements.

The cost of each electric bicycle will be around Rs. 250,000, and the provincial government has allocated a total budget of Rs. 50 million for this project. It was stated by the officials that the process of procurement and distribution will be carried out by the end of the current financial year.

An official from the excise department commented, “This will not only help inspectors to carry out their field duties more vigorously but also result in a significant reduction of fuel and maintenance-related costs.”

Such a policy is also part of the larger picture of Punjab’s transition to sustainable and cost-effective transportation. Over the last couple of years, the provincial government has been pushing for electric buses, e-taxis, and EV incentives as part of its climate and energy-saving strategy.

The introduction of electric bicycles for government departments indicates the rapid institutional acceptance of clean energy solutions. The use of electric bikes is anticipated to bring down the recurring fuel costs, minimize the carbon footprint, and facilitate the mobility of inspectors who are constantly moving short to medium distances.

The officials think that the initiative will not only bring about a radical change in the departmental logistics but also contribute to the environmental goals set for Pakistan.
