ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has made it clear that heavy bikes on motorways in Pakistan could be allowed again.

Recently, in a judicial hearing, it was stated that bikes with engines over 600cc could be allowed on motorways once riders comply with new required standards.

This latest update has been hailed as a breakthrough in lifting the existing ban on heavy bikes on motorways in Pakistan.

As per an APP report, there are plans to make all bikers undergo certified safety training, which would be mandatory if they want access to the motorways, as informed by the motorway administration in court.

To facilitate this, there are plans for new training and licensing centers in Islamabad and Sheikhupura. The aim is to make sure that bikers are equipped with the necessary expertise to handle high-powered motorcycles.

The case was adjourned by Justice Mohsin Akhtar Kayani until mid-October to allow for further discussion on the proposed safety guidelines. The court made it clear that the safety of the public will remain at the forefront of any decision regarding heavyweight bicycles on motorways in Pakistan.

The case has remained before the courts for a number of years. In 2018, the Islamabad High Court gave a relaxation to allow the use of bikes above 600cc on the motorways, provided some conditions were met. However, in 2022, the decision was overturned by the Supreme Court based on some concerns expressed. The Supreme Court later asked the High Court to revisit the case, with much more effective guidelines.

Although motorbike riders are hoping that relief will soon come their way, road safety experts are worried about speeding and the competency of motorbike riders. It is believed that training and licensing motorbike riders will work towards solving this problem.

Until a final announcement is made regarding a final decision, the ban on heavy motorbikes will be retained, and motorcyclists will have to wait for directions to be issued by the court as well as the motorway administrations.
