KARACHI: The Sindh province is gearing up to put in place a more rigid enforcement mechanism to stop the use of unregistered vehicles on the roads.

Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon announced this at a media briefing as he explained that a new bill has been introduced in the assembly of Sindh province and is being worked on currently.

This new law will make it mandatory for registration of all new imported cars, or even those made locally by registered dealers or showrooms, to take place within 15 days from the purchase date.

Motor vehicle owners or vehicle dealers who do not register their vehicles after purchase before the deadline given will be penalized.

If it is less than thirty days from the date of purchase, then a twenty thousand rupees penalty will be applied; If it is more than 150 days, the penalty will be 3000 Rs. Vehicles such as motorcycles, scooters, and rickshaws will also attract a penalty charge of 5000 rupees if the occasion lasts for more than 60 days.

Moreover, the proposed legislation also provides that the motor registration authority shall have the power to seize any vehicle that is not registered and such vehicle shall not be released until all the charges owed on the vehicle shall have been settled. Moreover, while such a law will be in effect, business on ‘open letters’ will also be stopped.

And now, the excise department has initiated an action plan to request how many vehicles are unregistered or have defaulted in taxes.

A total of 22,103 vehicles were examined during the operations 115 unregistered vehicles and 1,304 tax-defaulter vehicles were taken into custody. This operation has contributed to tax collection of Rs. 10.565 million and unpaid dues recovery of Rs. 873,000.

He further added that the government has also launched an action against vehicles found with fake number plates, tinted glasses, fitting police lights, and carrying arms.

20 vehicles have been confiscated, and 18 persons arrested, while Rs. 1.563 million fines have been imposed on 1,520 vehicles. Moreover, there are 27 cases concerning illegal firearms, 29 of which have been seized, and 34 individuals have been arrested.
