ISLAMABAD: Inflation-hit Pakistanis are facing another unpleasant situation as the prices of widely consumed chicken meat reached almost Rs900 per kg in the first week of January.
The twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad witnessed a staggering increase of Rs450 per kg in the price of chicken meat, with the meat being sold for around Rs890, leaving consumers disappointed. The surge is said to be due to a huge surge in demand during the cold season.
Rawalpindi was the worst-hit region where prices increased manifold and live chicken is being sold for Rs580 per kg. A similar trend has been observed in other cities, with Peshawar seeing a price increase of Rs25 per kg in just one day, reaching over Rs600.
Karachi has also been affected by the rising prices of chicken. Despite the official rate being set at Rs 635 per kg by the Commissioner Karachi, a kilo of meat is being sold for around Rs 700. Farm eggs are being sold in the city for Rs 350 per dozen.
Chicken prices have suddenly increased in Lahore, with the price of one kilo now at Rs 700, up from Rs 595 a few days ago.
