Electricity rates rise by Rs4.66 per unit amid increased fuel prices

KARACHI: The power regulator increased the price of energy by Rs4.56 per unit on Saturday, dealing yet another blow to those who are struggling with inflation.

In a notification, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) increased the power pricing in the account fuel adjustment costs for the month of December 2023 by Rs 4.56 per unit.

People were hoping for some respite before the elections, but instead they got hit twice: first with the price increase for gasoline, and now with the electricity tariff hike that would break their household budgets. The increase, which is related to fuel adjustments, will cost power users an extra Rs39.5 billion in total.

It is noteworthy that a fuel price adjustment has resulted in an increase of Rs8.69 in electricity costs in the last two months. Just in November, there was an increase of Rs4.13 in the electricity bill.

The increase in power tariffs has cost consumers an extra Rs76 billion in just two months. All consumer categories are affected by the recent rise in electricity tariffs, with the exception of those supplied by K-Electric and Lifeline subscribers.

Following the conclusion of the Central Power Purchasing Agency’s (CPPA) petition for an increase in the electricity tariff by Rs5.63 per unit, NEPRA notified the rise.

The decrease in electricity usage also contributed to the higher prices, and it will undoubtedly do so in the future, particularly during these difficult times when people are paying record-high prices for necessities.
