ISLAMABAD: After a gap of nearly two months, Pakistan’s energy sector has received a major boost with the arrival of a new LNG cargo at the Pakistan Gas Port Terminal.

According to officials, the LNG carrier CPEC Magellan has docked at the terminal operated by Pakistan Gas Port Consortium Limited and has begun supplying regasified liquefied natural gas (RLNG) into the national system.

The vessel is carrying approximately 140,000 cubic meters of LNG, procured by TotalEnergies at a reported rate of $18.40 per MMBtu. The regasification process initially started at 50 MMCF and has now been increased to 260 MMCF.

Officials said that around 45 MMCF of gas is being supplied to K-Electric, while the remaining volume is being injected into the network of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited to support domestic and industrial consumption.

The Power Division confirmed that electricity load management remained at zero until April 30, adding that the fresh LNG supply is expected to ease pressure on the power system, particularly as demand rises during the summer months.

Meanwhile, the government is also working to secure another LNG cargo between May 10 and 12. Officials said procurement options include open bidding or sourcing through SOCAR.

In a related development, Pakistan is making efforts to secure four LNG cargoes from Qatar that are currently delayed due to disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz.

Minister of State for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik has reportedly contacted the Iranian ambassador to ensure the safe passage of the shipments. Officials expressed optimism after a recent successful transit of a diesel cargo, hoping LNG shipments will also arrive soon.

Authorities believe that the timely arrival of these cargoes will significantly strengthen Pakistan’s energy security and help stabilize supply in the coming weeks.
