ISLAMABAD: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) may extend the deadline for filing income tax returns by 15 days, following a meeting between General Asim Munir, Chief of Army Staff, and Karachi’s business community, according to local media reports.

Initially, the FBR stated that September 30 would be the final date for submitting tax returns, with no extensions granted.

However, Talking with local media FBR spokesperson Bakhtiar Muhammad acknowledged that some taxpayers might struggle to meet the deadline and advised them to contact their tax commissioners for individual extensions.

“They can request an extension for specific reasons, but the deadline for the entire country will not be extended beyond 30th September,” he added.

Atif Ikram, President of the Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), has requested FBR Chairman Rashid Mahmood Langriyal to extend the deadline to October 15.

Ikram believes this extension would allow more individuals to file returns and alleviate taxpayer difficulties. The FBR previously ruled out extensions but may reconsider due to ongoing discussions. The current deadline remains September 30 for the 2022-23 tax year.
