ISLAMABAD: Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will register non-filer members of Supreme Court Bar Association.
The Federal Board of Revenue plans to bring non-filer members of the Supreme Court Bar Association into the tax net.
Sources said the FBR has drawn up a comprehensive plan to register 1 million non-filers in the tax net with the help of third-party data and the board’s central database.
FBR will bring non-filers members of Supreme Court Bar Association into the tax net with the help of available data in the first phase.
The Supreme Court Bar Association has about 3,400 members and the FBR is tracking non-filers of tax returns from the available data of Supreme Court Bar members.
According to sources, the FBR also briefed the Technical Tax Expert Team of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) on Monday on increasing the tax net.
“About 32 lakh taxpayers have filed income tax returns so far and the FBR plans to take these returns to over 6 million during the current financial year,” the IMF team was informed.
The FBR further informed the IMF that the tax machinery will meet the set tax collection target of RS 9.4 trillion for 2023-24.
The FBR has also shared a plan that the expected shortfall due to import compression in the coming months will be offset by domestic taxes, particularly direct taxes.
Sources said that the IMF’s technical team will (today) meet the task force on tax and FBR reforms on Tuesday.
The task force will share proposals to increase tax revenue and recommendations to address loopholes in the tax system.
The task force will propose short and long-term strategies to increase tax revenue using modern technology.
