Multiple electricity meters allowed under new consumer policy
ISLAMABAD: The federal government’s Power Division has rejected false claims regarding the ban on the installation of more than one electricity meter in a single residential property.
Terming the rumors as false and misleading, the clarification, issued on Sunday, stated that such news is a nefarious attempt to spread anxiety among the public.
However, the Power Division statement alleged a crackdown against the misuse of electricity and the improper benefit of subsidies on electricity rates under the law.
“Spreading and sharing such false news is a punishable offense under the PECA Act,” it read.
The ministry reiterated that a second electricity meter can still be obtained at any residential place under the prevailing laws, i.e., the Nepra Consumer Services Manual 2021.
The law states, “A separate meter is permitted to be installed in a residential place that has a separate portion, separate circuit, separate entrance, and separate kitchen.”
“The public is requested not to pay attention to such false news and cooperate with electricity distribution companies in the correct and transparent use of electricity meters so that the rightful owner continues to receive their right in a timely and correct manner,” the statement added.
