KARACHI: K-Electric, the electricity provider to Karachi, has issued a clarification statement denying an alleged notice on social media that misled consumers about electricity bills.

The unverified notice, which went viral on social media, claimed that if a protected category consumer consumes more than 200 units of electricity in a single month, he will be permanently removed from this concessional category.

K-Electric has rejected this rumor and directed the public to believe only official sources instead of listening to such sensational and unverified information.

According to the clarification statement issued by the K-Electric spokesperson, there has been no change in the prevailing terms and conditions of the federal government’s protected category.

The spokesperson clarified that even if a non-TOU consumer crosses the limit of 200 units in a single month, his protected status does not end forever. Rather, if that consumer later keeps his monthly units consumption at 200 or less for 6 consecutive months, then under the government policy, his protected status and affordable electricity facility are automatically restored.

The spokesperson has urged consumers to verify with the nearest K-Electric customer care center, 118 helpline or official social media handles before acting on any notice or news related to electricity bills, tariffs, or protected category.

Consumers have been warned to avoid false rumors spread on digital media to avoid any kind of mental distress or fear of overbilling.
