Oil, ghee & sugar prices shoot up after tax-heavy budget 2024-25

ISLAMABAD: The prices of staple food items rose after the government unveiled a tax-heavy budget to meet demands from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

As per the details, this has increased the prices of sugar, cooking oil and ghee in the country as the budget proposal came into force from July 1, 2024 after the approval of the Parliament.

In the local market, the price of a 50 kg bag of sugar increased by Rs250 to Rs6,950, while the price of a packet of ghee increased by Rs300.

An increase in the price of cooking oil was recorded by Rs40 per kg, while the price of moong dal increased by Rs60 to Rs340 per kg.

Moreover, prices of flour, dry milk, packed milk and other commodities were also recorded after the budget for the upcoming financial year 2024-25.

Meanwhile, Flour Mills Association has started a protest against the implementation of Withholding Tax. Flour mills in different cities of the country are closed due to protests, the owners are demanding the government to withdraw the decision.
