Pakistan-Bangladesh trade: 1,000 containers shipped since October

ISLAMABAD: National Logistics Corporation (NLC) and DP World, a Dubai-based multinational logistics firm, have shipped more than 1,000 containers between Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The first direct shipping service between Karachi and Chittagong, Bangladesh was launched in October, aimed at strengthening trade and regional connectivity in South Asia.

Launched on 30 October, the first voyage carried 304 containers booked directly from Karachi to Chittagong, according to a press release issued Wednesday.

The new Pakistan-Bangladesh direct maritime link reduced more than 50% of transit times and logistics costs, offering a remarkably efficient 11-day transit and elimination of transshipment, the statement read.

The maritime connection is part of a wider service connecting six countries, rotating between: Port Klang (Malaysia), Jebel Ali (UAE), Karachi (Pakistan), Chittagong (Bangladesh), Belawan (Indonesia), and Mundra (India).

Moreover, the shipping service between Karachi and Jebel Ali port of UAE will begin on January 13, with the first NLC vessel, having a capacity of 1,100 TEUs, scheduled to operate. A second vessel of similar capacity will be added by the end of January.

Additionally, an edible oil vessel is planned for February 2025, further expanding the scope of this collaborative effort.

“This initiative marks the start of a new era in trade, driven by the joint venture between DP World and NLC, and is an essential part of a larger regional roadmap focused on growth, prosperity, and progress for the entire region,” the statement read.
