LAHORE: The Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association’s recent report reveals the devastating impact of severe temperatures on cotton production in Punjab and Sindh.
The extreme weather has resulted in a significant decline in cotton yields, with Punjab’s production plummeting by 38.4% to 392,736 bales, compared to 636,684 bales last year.
Similarly, Sindh’s cotton crop has suffered a drastic 53.9% decline, with production dropping to 682,292 bales from 1.478 million bales last year.
To address the crisis, the Punjab Agriculture Department has launched a comprehensive management plan, leveraging support from the private sector and advanced technology.
The plan aims to mitigate the damage and optimize yields through advanced pest management strategies, backed by the Land Information and Management System (LIMS) and the Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB).
Moreover, Collaborative efforts with the private sector to enhance crop management practices. Targeted interventions to convert flowers into bolls and achieve the desired yield of 19.5 maund per acre in Punjab.
Despite the challenging weather conditions, a recent review meeting in Multan observed an increase in fruiting bodies, indicating a potential for improved yields.
The agriculture department remains committed to supporting farmers and exploring innovative solutions to minimize the impact of extreme weather on cotton production.
