Pakistan’s mobile phone imports down 13.6% in first 4 months of FY25

ISLAMABAD: The country imported mobile phones worth $420.799 million in the first four months (July to October) of the current fiscal year 2024-25, registering a negative growth of 10.46 percent compared to $469.969 million during the same period of the previous fiscal year. 2023-24.

Pakistan imported mobile phones worth $1.898 billion during the fiscal year 2023-24, while it was $570.071 million during the fiscal year 2022-23.

In rupee terms, the country imported mobile handsets worth Rs. 117.017 billion during the first four months of the current fiscal year and registered a negative growth of 13.62 percent compared to Rs. 135.468 billion during the same period of the previous fiscal year.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), Pakistan’s mobile phone imports in October 2024 increased by 69.89 percent on a month-on-month (MoM) basis and stood at $174.338 million as compared to imports of $102.618 million in September 2024.

On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, mobile phone imports saw a 5.06 percent increase as compared to $165.941 million in October 2023.

The country’s overall telecom imports during July-October 2024 stood at $609.520 million and increased by 0.44 percent as compared to $606.833 million during July-October 2023.

Overall telecom imports grew by 53.92% on a MoM basis in October 2024 to $235.349 million as compared to imports of $152.905 million in September 2024. On a year-on-year basis, overall telecom imports witnessed a growth of 13.27% as compared to imports of $13.27 million in October 2027.

Local manufacturing/assembling plants manufactured/assembled 22.59 million mobile handsets during the first nine months (January-September) of calendar year 2024 while 1.17 million were imported commercially.

Official data shows that 2.15 million mobile handsets were manufactured/assembled locally in September while 0.07 million mobile handsets were imported commercially.

The 22.59 million locally manufactured/assembled mobile phone handsets include 8.73 million 2G and 13.86 million smartphones.

In addition, according to PTA data, 64 percent of mobile devices on Pakistan’s network are smartphones and 36 percent are 2G.
