Says short growth duration could be profitable for farmers

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security & Research, Dr Kausar Abdullah Malik, has emphasised the importance of soybean cultivation for farmers’ financial benefit during the National Workshop on Soybean Production in Pakistan.

Organised by the Ministry of National Food Security and Research, Pakistan Agricultural Research Council, and the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in Islamabad, the event aimed to highlight the potential advantages of soybean crops for Pakistani farmers.

Malik made the observation that farmers might find soybeans to be more profitable due to their short growth period. He emphasized the importance of soybeans to trade and the economy worldwide and called for the introduction of financial incentives to promote soybean farming.

The participants acknowledged that soybeans, with their 40–42% protein content, 20–22% oil content, and 20–30% carbohydrate content, are rich in essential nutrients. 370 million tonnes of soybeans are produced worldwide, with Brazil, the US, Argentina, China, and India being the top producers. Malik emphasized that soybeans are leguminous, which allows them to fix nitrogen in the soil, improving fertility and promoting sustainable farming methods. He underlined how important soybeans are as a worldwide commodity.
