KARACHI: The Sindh Assembly’s parliamentary committee on Tuesday decided to give grace marks to first-year intermediate students in Karachi who failed their annual examinations.

The decision was taken following a report by a fact-finding committee headed by Dr. Sarosh Lodi, which had raised concerns about the procedures and administrative structure of the Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK).

The Sindh Assembly’s parliamentary committee met to investigate the Karachi inter-student examinations.

After the committee meeting, Sindh Education Minister Syed Sardar Ali Shah said that the fact-finding committee headed by Dr. Sarosh Lodi has submitted an investigation report on the first-year examination results of BIEK. The report raised questions on several aspects of the board’s procedures and administration.

In light of the results, Sardar Shah announced that grace marks would be given to students who failed the examinations.

He stressed that there was clear evidence of injustice against these students, pointing out that their matriculation marks were good but their first year results had significantly declined.

The Sindh Education Minister said that students would be given 15 percent grace marks in physics and mathematics while 20 percent grace marks would be given in chemistry.

The move is aimed at addressing the injustice done to students who performed well in their matriculation exams but saw a significant decline in their first year intermediate results.

The minister assured that the board’s structure and examination format would be reviewed and action would be taken against those responsible for the students’ failure.
