ISLAMABAD: OpenAI is releasing a new version of its AI assistant targeted at K-12 teachers. Called ChatGPT for Teachers, the service is built for classroom use and will be free for verified school employees until June 2027.

The move comes at a time when many students already use ChatGPT to do homework, and now OpenAI wants teachers to start using the technology for their work.

A Classroom-Ready Version of ChatGPT

OpenAI refers to ChatGPT for Teachers as a tool that can assist educators in crafting assignments, developing lesson plans, and creating classroom materials.

According to the company, this is all about giving teachers an avenue to experiment with AI at their own pace and within a controlled environment. It features a collection of the same capabilities offered in the consumer edition of ChatGPT, including unlimited messages with GPT-5.1 Auto, the ability to bring in app connectors, file uploads, image generation, and memory tools.

What differentiates this edition from the consumer version is that it complies with the Family Education Rights Act and sets stringent guidelines for the handling of student data.

OpenAI has also concentrated on collaboration features. Teachers can share chats with their colleagues, and new conversations will open with suggestions based on how other educators have used the assistant.

Before offering it directly to teachers, OpenAI launched ChatGPT Edu, a system for schools and universities to give institutional access to students, as many currently do with email accounts.

The company released Study Mode, a feature for all users that facilitates step-by-step explanations of the answers. OpenAI is not alone in attempting to gain ground in schools. Google, for example, has been offering discounts on its Gemini tools in an attempt to make it more appealing to more students.

OpenAI now hopes that by appealing to teachers, it will be able to strengthen its position in the education sector and encourage broader adoption of its AI models.
