LAHORE: Every year in Punjab, schools and other educational institutions were closed for about two weeks for the winter holidays to protect the students and staff from harsh weather conditions and related diseases.
According to previous records, the Department of Schools Education used to announce winter vacations in December, the last month of the calendar year, and schools reopened in January.
In December, the mercury dropped to 7 or 8 degrees Celsius in Punjab, accompanied by fog, making it difficult for school children to attend classes. This is the reason why the authorities have announced winter vacation for all public and private schools.
Last year, the provincial government had earlier announced winter vacation from December 18 to 31, but the students and their parents had also demanded to extend the vacation by a week due to severe weather and heavy fog.
The provincial government later extended the holidays till January 9, 2023, announcing that schools would reopen on January 10.
Punjab government is likely to start winter vacation in schools from December 21 (Saturday) while schools will open on January 1 (Wednesday).
However, the final decision on holidays for all public and private schools will be taken by the concerned authorities. Stay connected with Pakistan Observer to get updates about Winter Holidays 2024.
