LAHORE: The University of Health Sciences (UHS) has expanded its flagship community service program “Pyari Beti” to include undergraduate medical students as part of their academic curriculum.

This initiative aims to provide adolescent girls from all socioeconomic backgrounds with guidance on reproductive health, psychological wellbeing, and nutrition.

UHS Vice Chancellor Prof. Ahsan Waheed Rathore announced that fourth-year MBBS students at UHS-affiliated colleges will participate in this mandatory community service activity, engaging in classroom-based learning and field visits to schools and local health facilities.

Through this program, students will interact with girls aged 9-19, addressing physical and psychological challenges related to reproductive health using evidence-based practices.

Their activities will be documented in a logbook and assessed as part of their internal evaluation in Community Medicine, as well as during the 4th professional examination.

Prof. Rathore emphasized the importance of preparing students not only academically but also emotionally and ethically for this role, expecting long-term benefits for the health and social empowerment of young girls across the province.

The UHS has also encouraged the development of undergraduate research projects related to Pyari Beti, with funding available for meaningful studies.

This initiative reflects the university’s commitment to socially responsive medical education, providing students with real-world experiences and opportunities to serve the community.

By integrating community service into the curriculum, UHS aims to produce well-rounded medical professionals equipped to address the healthcare needs of diverse populations.
