GILGIT: Newly elected Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Amjad Hussain Advocate, has taken the oath of office today in a ceremony witnessed by political representatives, government representatives, and dignitaries.
The Governor of Gilgit-Baltistan, Syed Mehdi Shah, has administered the oath of office to the newly elected chief minister.
Addressing the gathering on the occasion of his first speech as the new chief minister, Mr Amjad Hussain vowed to contribute towards the development and prosperity of Gilgit-Baltistan.
“I will try my best to contribute towards the development of this region by encouraging investment, tourism, good governance, and transparency,” he declared.
Mr Amjad Hussain said thanks to the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) for supporting the government formation process. He appreciated that democracy had been served in the political process.
“The people of Gilgit-Baltistan have chosen the Pakistan Peoples Party, and I will try my best to serve them according to their expectations,” he further remarked.
He talked about the strategic and economic significance of Gilgit-Baltistan. He pointed out that Gilgit-Baltistan’s glaciers were important for providing water to Pakistan.
Amjad Hussain Advocate is regarded as one of the prominent political and legal figures of Gilgit-Baltistan. Born in 1975 in the Imphri area of Gilgit, he belongs to a well-known political family. His father, the late Azar Khan, was a respected political and social leader and served as chairman of Gilgit District.
He received his early education in Gilgit, completed his FSc from Public School Jutial, and obtained an LLB degree from the University of the Punjab in 2000 before entering the legal profession.
His political journey began during his student years, and in 1996, he was elected district president of the Peoples Students Federation. Over the years, he emerged as a key leader of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) in Gilgit-Baltistan.
In the legal field, he has served as president of the Gilgit-Baltistan Bar Council and the People’s Lawyers Forum and is widely recognized as a senior lawyer of the Supreme Appellate Court of Gilgit-Baltistan.
Between 2010 and 2015, he served as a member of the Gilgit-Baltistan Council, where he contributed to legislative and constitutional reforms aimed at enhancing the region’s governance framework.
In 2016, the PPP appointed him as its provincial president in Gilgit-Baltistan. Under his leadership, the party strengthened its organizational structure and improved its electoral position in the region.
During the 2020 Gilgit-Baltistan Assembly elections, the PPP secured four seats and emerged as the party with the highest overall vote count in the region. Amjad Hussain successfully contested and won elections from constituencies in Gilgit and Nagar.
Apart from politics and law, he is also associated with the petroleum business and has maintained an active interest in sports. A former football player, he is also known for his interest in fishing and reading.
As chief minister, Amjad Hussain has pledged to focus on employment generation, institutional reforms, youth development, economic empowerment, and improved governance, to build a prosperous future for Gilgit-Baltistan
