WASHINGTON D.C: Former President Donald Trump has defeated Democrat candidate Kamala Harris in a historic election cycle and has been elected the 47th president of the United States, the Associated Press reported.
Trump made an “extraordinary comeback” after the 2020 election, in which he refused to accept defeat and sparked a violent insurrection at the U.S. Capitol. The former President was convicted of felony charges and survived two assassination attempts.
Trump will be the first president to serve two non-consecutive terms since Grover Cleveland in 1892 — and only the second in history.
As the battle for the presidential seat between Donald Trump and Kamala Harris continues, Republicans won control of the U.S. Senate with victories in 51 seats, in comparison to Demcorat’s popularity in 42 states, ensuring that Donald Trump’s party will control at least one chamber of Congress next year.
In his address in Florida on early Wednesday, projected President Donald Trump told his supporters that this moment will “help this country heal.” Trump was joined on stage by members of his family and his wife, Melania Trump, as well as his running mate, JD Vance, and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
At a convention center in West Palm Beach, Trump promised Americans that every day I would be fighting for them and said he would usher in America’s golden age.
Trump celebrated Republicans winning control of the Senate. “America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate. We have taken back control of the Senate – wow that’s good,” he told his supporters.
“And the Senate races in Montana, Nevada, Texas, Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, the great Commonwealth of Pennsylvania were all won by the MAGA movement they helped so much,” Trump said.
Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance thanked former President Donald Trump for allowing him to join his campaign, CNN reported.
Talking to a crowd of supporters early Wednesday, Vance thanked Trump for the trust that you placed in me. “I think that we just witnessed the greatest political comeback in the history of the United States of America,” Vance said, though several states are still counting votes.
He promised that he and Trump would now lead the greatest economic comeback in American history.
A candidate needs a total of at least 270 votes in the state-by-state Electoral College to claim the presidency.
Donald Trump had won 195 Electoral College votes to Harris’ 226 as of 10:30 PST on Thursday, the Associated Press called the race.
