Peace Board meeting underway in Washington, PM Shehbaz participates

WASHINGTON: The first meeting of the Peace Board is underway in Washington under the chairmanship of US President Donald Trump, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif representing Pakistan.

The meeting is discussing key issues, including the reconstruction of Gaza, the formation of a global stabilization force, and efforts to ensure peace and stability in the region.

According to international media reports, President Trump is expected to announce the amount collected for Gaza’s reconstruction, while discussions on establishing a global stabilization force are also part of the agenda.

President Trump warmly welcomed Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif at the start of the meeting and expressed appreciation for him. The prime minister thanked the US president for the invitation. A group photo of participating world leaders was taken before the formal session began.

During his address, President Trump praised Pakistan Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, calling him a high-ranking military leader and a capable fighter. The remarks received notable coverage in the US media.

The US president also referred to Pakistan-India tensions, stating that the situation had been escalating and that the United States played a role in preventing further conflict. He said warnings of heavy tariffs were conveyed if the war was not stopped. Trump added that close communication was maintained with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif during the period of tension.

According to reports, the meeting is being held with limited participation to facilitate quicker decision-making. Permanent members of the UN Security Council, including China, Russia, and Britain, did not attend the session.

Officials said Pakistan’s participation in the meeting could contribute to regional peace initiatives and humanitarian efforts.
