PM Shehbaz lands in New York to attend 79th UNGA session

NEW YORK: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York on Monday to join world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly’s (UNGA) 79th session.

During his five-day official trip to the United States, the Prime Minister will present Pakistan’s perspective to the world, advocate the country’s interests, and strengthen international partnerships.

He is scheduled to address the UN General Assembly on September 27 (Friday).

Today, PM Shehbaz will attend the reception given by the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for the heads of member states, where the Prime Minister will have informal meetings with the heads of various countries, Prime Minister’s Office said in a press release.

The Prime Minister will also attend the opening ceremony of the 79th session of the UNGA today. Furthermore, he will also have a meeting with the President of Maldives Mohamed Muizzu in which there will be a discussion regarding the promotion of bilateral cooperation between the two countries.

He is accompanied by Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Attaullah Tarar, Minister for Education Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, and Special Assistant Tariq Fatemi.

PM to address UNGA session

In his address, the premier will highlight Pakistan’s perspective on a range of international and regional issues of concern, including the Kashmir dispute and Palestine issue.

PM Shehbaz will reaffirm Pakistan’s steadfast commitment to multilateralism and support for the role of the United Nations in fostering global peace, security and prosperity.

He will express Pakistan’s commitment, as an incoming member of the UN Security Council for the year 2025-26, to work with all UN Member States to uphold the UN Charter, preventing conflict, fostering peace & promoting global prosperity.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, he is scheduled to attend several high-level meetings, including discussions on existential threats posed by sea level rise and the UN Security Council’s open debate on ‘Leadership for Peace’.
