LAHORE: The Punjab government has announced plans to introduce genetically modified (GM) seeds in the province to boost crop production and address the impact of climate change.

This decision was made during a meeting between the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock, Syed Ashiq Hussain Kirmani, and representatives of multinational seed companies.

In addition, the meeting focused on modern seed technology innovations for cotton, maize, and other essential crops.

Minister Kirmani emphasized the importance of introducing high-yielding, disease-resistant seeds to farmers to achieve production targets.

Moreover, he also highlighted the need for collaboration between research institutions, academia, and stakeholders to develop advanced seed technology.

The government aims to increase crop production through biotechnology and has directed stakeholders to submit proposals for enhancing cotton production. These proposals will be reviewed and sent to the Chief Minister for approval.

Earlier, the Punjab government increased the agriculture development budget by 250% this year, demonstrating its commitment to supporting farmers.

Initiatives like the Kisan Card, Green Tractor Scheme, Solarisation of tube wells, and Agricultural Malls aim to promote agricultural development in the province.

Additionally, 1,000 agricultural graduates have been recruited under the Chief Minister Internship Programme this year.
