WASHINGTON: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) on Saturday updated its position on the origins of Covid-19, saying it is “more likely” that the virus leaked from a Chinese laboratory rather than being transmitted naturally from animals.
The change comes after CIA Director John Ratcliffe was confirmed during Donald Trump’s second White House administration. Ratcliffe, who previously served as Director of National Intelligence from 2020 to 2021, identified the investigation into the origins of Covid-19 as a top priority.
In an interview published on Friday, Ratcliffe told the right-wing outlet Breitbart that the CIA would be taking a more active role in the matter. “The agency is going to be phased out,” said Ratcliffe, who supports the theory that Covid-19 originated at the Wuhan Institute of Virology.
A CIA spokesman revealed in a statement on Saturday that the agency now assesses with less confidence that the origin of the pandemic is more likely to be research-related than natural. However, the spokesman stressed that both scenarios are plausible based on current intelligence.
This marks a departure from the agency’s previous neutral stance, as it had not previously determined whether the virus resulted from a laboratory accident or spread naturally from animals.
According to a US official, the revised assessment stems from a new analysis of current intelligence, ordered by former CIA Director William Burns and finalized before Ratcliffe was appointed.
While divisions remain within the US intelligence community, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Department of Energy also support the lab leak theory, albeit with varying levels of confidence. Meanwhile, most other agencies favor the natural origin hypothesis.
Proponents of the lab leak scenario point to the fact that the first known cases of COVID-19 emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan — home to the Wuhan Institute of Virology and a major center for coronavirus research — located about 1,600 kilometers from bat populations. Viruses like SARS.
As investigations continue, the debate over the origins of the pandemic highlights the complexity of tracing zoonotic diseases and the critical importance of transparency in global health research.
