KARACHI: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at the National Institute of Child Health (NICH), Karachi, successfully performed surgery to separate two-month-old twins from Naushahro Feroze.

The complex operation lasted 10-12 hours and involved a team of 10 medical professionals, including four specialist surgeons from major hospitals across Karachi.

The twins, named Naila and Shumaila, were born on September 10 at a private hospital. Their grandmother said that the girls’ parents, Ghulam Mustafa and his wife, faced financial difficulties in arranging the surgery. However, an NICH official said that the hospital administration covered all the expenses.

Experts from NICH, Aga Khan University Hospital, National Institute of Cardiovascular Diseases (NICVD) and Sindh Institute of Child Health and Neonatology (SICHN) collaborated on the procedure. NICH Executive Director Dr Nasir Siddle said that experts from private hospitals were also consulted during the planning phase.

“The surgery was difficult but successful, thanks to the teamwork and expertise of everyone involved. Both girls are in good health,” Professor Siddle said.

The twins’ grandmother thanked the medical team and assistants. “We didn’t have the money for the operation. I thank everyone who helped us and the doctors who worked so hard to save our girls.
