ISLAMABAD: After six decades of political and diplomatic hostilities, India and Pakistan were finally playing tennis against one another. This was a historic occurrence.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) will host the men’s tennis major international team event, which pits teams from over 140 contending nations against one another every year. The two tennis teams were to play a Davis Cup tie at the Islamabad Sports Complex on February 3 and 4.

Five players and officials from the Indian tennis squad took a separate trip to Islamabad. A sizable contingent of supporters, members of the media, and security guards greeted them.
The Davis Cup was first contested in 1900 as a match between the United States and Great Britain, but it quickly spread to other nations. 155 countries had joined the competition by 2023.
The United States, Australia, and Great Britain were the most successful nations, although the trophy was also won by France, Sweden, Italy, and Czechoslovakia. India and Pakistan had a long history of playing tennis in the region, but they had never won the Davis Cup.

The Indian team had previously visited Pakistan in 1964, back when relations between the two nations were still fairly amicable. The matches were close and contested, but the Indian team had prevailed 4-1 in the encounter.
Since then, there have been other wars and disputes between the two nations, and their ties have gotten worse. Only twice had they faced off in the Davis Cup, on neutral grounds in 1973 and 2006. Pakistan had fought hard, but India had won both matches.
