GADDANI: Fishermen in the coastal area of Gaddani in Balochistan were left amazed after they witnessed a massive whale sighted just off the coast on Tuesday.

According to the fishermen, the whale measured approximately 100 and 50 feet in length and width, respectively, and could’ve weighed more than 150 tonnes.

This is the first time that the massive marine mammal has been sighted in Balochistan’s waters alive as often dead whales wash up on these shores. The fish has been declared endangered by international agencies.

The whale sighting has given the fishermen’s community optimism that the waters of Balochistan are still home to a healthy marine ecosystem.

In 2021, scientists discovered that whales were making their way back to the Indian Ocean, where they may even be mating. There was hope that whales would repopulate the ocean after footage of the giant fish went viral near the coast of Seychelles.

Last year in May, a 27-foot-long Blue whale had washed up dead near Balochistan’s coast in a remote area of Raini Hor between Pasni and Shumal Bundar. It was identified as a blue whale, one of the three whale species found in Pakistani waters, alongside Bryde’s whale and Arabian humpback whale.
