ISLAMABAD: Lt. Gen. (r) Faiz Hameed, the former Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (DG-ISI), has been called before the Faizabad Dharna Commission.

Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed has been asked by the commission, which is in charge of looking into the Tehreek-e-Laibak Pakistan (TLP) sit-in at Faizabad, Islamabad, to provide evidence about it.

The Hum Investigation Team was informed by officials that Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed received a notice from the Ministry of Defence requesting his attendance before the commission the following week. This was done on behalf of the commission. During this session, his statement and all pertinent evidence should be recorded.

The Faizabad Dharna Commission has called for General Faiz to appear twice now. Despite being called two weeks prior, he failed to show up. Speaking with Hum, officials suggested that his non-appearance could have been due to the short notice period. This is the reason, according to a knowledgeable representative of the Hum Investigation Team, that the commission has sent out a second notice in order to guarantee enough time for compliance.

During the tenure of then-prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi in 2017, Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed, the Director General (counter-terrorism) of ISI, was instrumental in interacting with TLP protesters in Islamabad and facilitating a peaceful resolution.

A number of important parties, including former prime minister Abbasi and interior minister Ahsan Iqbal, have been making statements to the commission. Well-informed officials predict that by the second week of January 2024, the commission will probably have finished its report.
