Nazia Hassan, ‘queen of pop’ was born 59 years ago today

KARACHI: Sensational South Asian pop singer Nazia Hassan’s 59th birth anniversary is being celebrated on Wednesday. Pakistani pop star referred to as the Queen of South Asian Pop, was born on April 3, 1965, in Karachi.

From her debut song ‘Aap Jaisa Koi’ at the age of 15 to ‘Disco Deewane,’ her debut album in 1981 became the best-selling Asian pop record at the time.

Some of the favorite and top acclaimed songs by the singer include Aap Jaisa Koi, Boom Boom, Disco Deewane, Aankhein Milane Wale, Dum Dum Dee Dee, and Dosti.

To honor her vibrant contemporary pop music, Hassan received a Filmfare Award in 1980, the first Pakistani singer to receive at 15, for Best Female Playback Singer. In 1988 Nazia was awarded Nigar Award for Best Compere. In 1989 she was awarded the PTV Silver Jubilee Award at the 9th PTV Awards for her contributions to the Music Industry.

In 2014, Richmond American University, London honored her posthumous honorary degree of doctorate. Nazia’s son Arez Hassan received the honorary degree on her behalf.

President of Pakistan to honor her excellence awarded her with Pride of Performance. She is also the recipient of a Golden Disc Award. In 2022 on November 24 she was awarded the Lux Changemaker Award at the 21st Lux Style Awards the award was given to her family.

She died of cancer on August 13, 2000, at the age of 35 in London. Following a Namaz-e-janaza, Nazia was buried at Hendon Cemetery in London on September 5, 2000.
