LAHORE: After a prolonged winter break due to smog and extreme cold, Punjab schools have finally reopened, with students returning to their classrooms on Wednesday.

The winter break, which began on December 18, 2023, was originally scheduled to end on January 1, 2024. However, due to persistent smog and extreme cold weather conditions, the holidays were extended until January 9, 2024.

Authorities have changed school hours due to the persistent early morning fog and cold temperatures. From today until January 22, primary, middle, high, and higher secondary schools will open at 9:30 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m.

Mohsin Naqvi, the caretaker Chief Minister of Punjab, confirmed the reopening of schools via X (formerly Twitter).

He emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring students’ safety and well-being. To protect themselves from the extreme cold, Naqvi advised children to dress warmly and wear jackets.

The decision to extend the winter break stemmed from the province’s unusually harsh winter, which saw temperatures drop significantly.

Parents have expressed their support for the extended winter break, describing it as a critical step to protect their children.

The government’s emphasis on student safety and health is evident, with weather conditions being monitored on a regular basis.

Officials claim that any future decisions about school schedules or holidays will prioritize the best interests of students.

As schools in Punjab reopen, parents and students are encouraged to stay informed about developments at their respective educational institutions.
