Shehbaz Sharif elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan for second consecutive time

Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Shehbaz Sharif was elected as Prime Minister of Pakistan for the second consecutive time today (Sunday).

Shehbaz Sharif was elected as Pakistan’s 24th Prime Minister, defeating PTI-backed SIC candidate Omar Ayub Khan in a secret balloting today during the National Assembly session.

Shehbaz Sharif secured 201 votes to be elected as the leader of the house while PTI-backed Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Omar Ayub Khan bagged 92 votes, securing the seat of the opposition leader.

National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq presided over the lower house session which began with the oath-taking of PML-N’s Jam Kamal Khan, later voting for the slot of leader of the house started.

As soon as the session began, SIC lawmakers chanted slogans to record their protest against alleged rigging in the recently held February 8 elections while holding PTI founder Imran Khan’s pictures.

Earlier on Saturday, Newly-elected National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq approved the nomination papers of both leaders for the prime minister election after scrutiny.

On Saturday, PML-N’s Ishaq Dar, Hanif Abbasi, and PPP’s Khursheed Shah submitted the nomination papers of Shehbaz Sharif.

While MNAs Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Asad Qaiser, Riaz Khan Fatyana, Umair Khan Niazi, and seconded by MNAs Mohammad Sanaullah Khan Mastikhel, Ali Khan Jadoon, Mujahid Ali, and Malik Mohammad Amir Dogar submitted documents on behalf of Omar Ayub.
