Toshakhana Reference Case:

The legal woes of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan continue to multiply as Founder PTI Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi indicted with fourteen years in prison. Accountability court’s judge Muhammad Bashir announced the verdict, also disqualifying the former prime minister for 10 years while handing over a fine of Rs1.573 billion to the couple.

The court had previously recorded Bushra Bibi’s statement under Section 342 during the prior hearing, which was also held at the Adiala jail. Khan told the court that his wife was being humiliated by being forced into a lawsuit that she had nothing to do with.

Judge Bashir questioned Khan on whether he had taped his statement at the beginning of today’s hearing. In response, the former prime minister stated he would provide his testimony as soon as his attorneys arrived. The PTI founder declared, “I have been duped, as I was only called to mark my attendance for the hearing.”

The Islamabad High Court (IHC), on the other hand, deemed accurate the notification of Khan’s jail trial in Toshakhana and the £190 million settlement cases. The PTI founder’s appeals against the jail trial in the cases brought by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) were also denied by the court.

The petitioner’s life was allegedly threatened, leading to the jail trial, albeit it was clarified that there was no “malice” involved. Chief Justice Aamer Farooq of the IHC and Justice Tariq Jahangiri gave a thorough ruling, dismissing the petitioner’s objections regarding the accountability judge’s appointment.
