Malala’s documentary ‘The Last of the Sea Women’ wins prestigious award at TIFF 2024

TORONTO: Pakistani Nobel laureate Malala Yousafzai’s production company has secured a major triumph with the documentary “The Last of the Sea Women” winning the esteemed NETPAC award for Best Asian Film at the 49th Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).

Directed by Sue Kim, the documentary sheds light on the lives of Jeju Island’s elderly female divers, known as haenyeo, struggling against global warming and ocean pollution to preserve their unique cultural heritage.

The NETPAC Jury praised the film, stating: “The moving and illuminating portrayal of these sea warriors inspires and calls us to action. Director Sue Kim’s beautiful, humorous, and compassionate storytelling elevates the daily struggles of marginalized women in their 60s and 70s.”

Malala Yousafzai shared her excitement at TIFF, saying: “The documentary features captivating scenes from inside the sea, showcasing women sea warriors fighting climate change and global warming. I hope it will enthrall viewers.”

TIFF concluded its 11-day run with an awards ceremony, presenting 10 jury-awarded prizes and the People’s Choice Awards.
