Iran challenges Trump over Strait of Hormuz after the country’s Revolutionary Guard responded to recent remarks by former US President Donald Trump.
According to Iranian state media, a spokesperson for the Revolutionary Guard said the United States should try sending its naval ships if it wants to protect oil tankers passing through the strategic waterway.
The statement came after Donald Trump said earlier this week that the US Navy could provide security to commercial ships moving through the Strait of Hormuz if the situation demands.
Trump stated that American naval forces may accompany commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe passage. He also added that US financial institutions could help with insurance matters related to shipping in the region.
Iran challenges Trump over Strait of Hormuz at a time when tensions in the region remain sensitive. The waterway is considered one of the most important global routes for oil transportation.
The Strait of Hormuz connects the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea. A large portion of the world’s oil shipments pass through this narrow route every day.
Many oil-producing countries in the Middle East depend on this route to export energy to global markets. These include Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates.
Because of its strategic importance, any tension in the Strait of Hormuz can affect global energy supplies and international shipping.
