Preparations for Basant 2026 have gained momentum after the Punjab government decided to widen the scope of Punjab kite manufacturing districts, allowing production beyond Lahore in a move aimed at meeting demand and controlling prices. The decision comes as the province prepares to revive the traditional festival after a gap of more than two decades, under carefully enforced safety rules.

According to official notifications, the Punjab cabinet has approved the manufacturing of permitted kite-flying material in Faisalabad, Kasur, Sheikhupura, and Multan. Manufacturers in these districts will be required to register with their respective deputy commissioners and strictly follow government-approved standards. Authorities say the step is intended to regulate production, discourage illegal materials, and ensure safer celebrations.

The provincial government had already announced last month that Basant would be celebrated under strict conditions, lifting a long-standing ban imposed due to safety concerns. Lahore is set to host the main festivities from February 6 to 8, with administrations across the city working to manage crowds, rooftops, and supply chains.

Expanded manufacturing to stabilize markets

Lahore-based Consumer Association officials noted that sourcing kites and strings from outside the provincial capital could ease pressure on local suppliers and reduce prices for buyers.

Market observers believe the wider supply network may lower prices by a noticeable margin while also limiting the risk of shortages during peak days. Some consumer representatives have also suggested that regulated supply from other parts of the country could further support affordability, provided safety standards are enforced uniformly.

Meanwhile, Lahore has taken on a festive look as public spaces and major roads are decorated with lights, banners, and kite-themed installations. The Parks and Horticulture Authority has installed symbolic displays at key locations, adding to the city’s celebratory atmosphere.

Safety measures and official monitoring

Alongside celebrations, the Punjab administration has emphasized strict monitoring. Rooftop kite flying will only be allowed after mandatory registration, in line with official standard operating procedures. Authorities are using drone surveillance for inspections, while quick response teams have been deployed across all tehsils to ensure compliance.

Officials have reiterated a zero-tolerance policy for violations, warning that unregistered rooftops or banned materials will lead to immediate action. Awareness campaigns are also underway in schools and colleges to promote safe practices during Basant.

Public transport departments have joined the celebrations by decorating buses with Basant-themed artwork. Free travel has been announced on metro bus, Orange Line, Speedo, and electric bus services during the festival days, making it easier for residents to participate.

As markets fill with shoppers and families prepare for the long-awaited event, authorities maintain that cooperation from the public will be key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable Basant for everyone.
