A Russian oil tanker drone attack in the Black Sea near Turkey caused an explosion early Thursday, raising fresh concerns about maritime security in the region. Authorities confirmed that all crew members remained safe after the incident.

Turkey’s Transport Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, said the tanker was hit by a marine drone while sailing close to the Bosphorus Strait. The vessel, named Altura, was about 18 nautical miles away from the key shipping route.

Officials reported that 27 crew members were on board at the time of the Russian oil tanker drone attack. Emergency teams, including the Turkish coastguard, were quickly sent to assist the vessel.

The tanker had earlier departed from Russia’s Novorossiysk port carrying nearly one million barrels of crude oil. Data showed the ship was almost fully loaded when the attack happened.

According to initial reports, the drone strike likely targeted the engine room, causing damage and water leakage. The explosion also affected parts of the ship, prompting the crew to seek immediate help.

The Black Sea remains a sensitive zone due to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. In recent months, several vessels linked to Russian trade have been targeted, increasing risks for global shipping routes.

The attacked tanker is reportedly under sanctions imposed by the European Union and the United Kingdom. Maritime insurance costs in the region have also risen due to similar incidents in the past.

So far, there has been no official response from Moscow or Kyiv regarding this Russian oil tanker drone attack. Investigations are expected to determine the exact source and impact of the strike.
