The Strait of Hormuz crisis has intensified as the United Nations Security Council prepares to vote on a key resolution on Tuesday. The move comes as the United States increases pressure on Iran to reopen the vital shipping route, which is crucial for global energy supplies.
Diplomatic sources say the proposed resolution urges Iran to stop attacks on commercial ships. It also calls for ensuring safe navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, a major oil transit route.
However, the draft resolution has been softened after objections from permanent members of the Security Council. The latest version does not allow the use of force, reflecting divisions among global powers.
At the same time, US President Donald Trump has issued a strong warning to Iran. He has set a deadline, demanding that Tehran reopen the Strait or face possible military strikes on key infrastructure, including power plants and bridges.
Trump addressed the media on Monday, highlighting a recent military rescue operation. He described it as a major success and praised US forces for bringing back a stranded airman from enemy territory.
The president used the moment to project strength, even as the conflict enters its fifth week. He admitted the operation involved risks but said it showed America’s commitment to protecting its personnel.
Despite the strong tone, Trump did not clearly say whether the US would escalate the conflict further. He expressed frustration over slow diplomatic progress and lack of support from some allies.
Meanwhile, tensions have also affected the wider region. A major bridge linking Saudi Arabia and Bahrain was temporarily closed due to security threats linked to possible Iranian attacks.
Reports from Iranian media also claimed that a religious site in Tehran was hit by projectiles. Details about casualties remain unclear.
Iran has responded to US proposals through diplomatic channels. According to official sources, Tehran has rejected a temporary ceasefire and instead demanded a permanent end to the war.
The Iranian response reportedly includes several key conditions. These include lifting sanctions, ensuring safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz, and rebuilding affected areas.
As the deadline approaches, the situation remains uncertain. The upcoming UN vote and ongoing diplomatic efforts could play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of the crisis.
